Volkhov (population 51 000) is a small city located on the Volkhov River approximately 125 km (2 hours by car) east of St. Petersburg on highways M18 and A115. The river bisects the city into a north western and southeastern half. Volkhov is a major transport hub for railway connections. Four major railway lines come together at Volkhov from St. Petersburg, Murmansk, the Urals and Moscow.
