Petrozavodsk (population 282 000) is located approximately 360 km northeast of St. Petersburg, and sits on the western edge of a large inlet of Lake Onezhskoe. The city extends from its southern and northwest shore along the edge of the lake. Petrozavodsk can be reached by rail (from Moscow or St. Petersburg), by plane (from Helsinki in Finland) or by car (from St. Petersburg).
